Welcome to Birding Toronto

This site was opened to provide information for any birders who need birding resources for the GTA. The hope is that it will allow for collaboration between birders and draw attention to the number of quality birding areas in and around Toronto. The shoreline of Lake Ontario is somewhat underrated in birding circles compared to the other great lake to the south-west but locals can find great diversity, even in a highly urbanized setting like the GTA. With a strong birding community, maybe a sense of responsibility towards conservation can also be a pleasant result. Barring that pie-in-the-sky thought, this site will hopefully give you the information you need to enjoy yourself. This site does focus in on the GTA, which ( in this site's view ) stretches from Hamilton in the West to Bowmanville in the East ( no offense to anyone ). Notable sites just ooutside the GTA will also be described ( i.e. Carden, 1 hour north of Toronto, for example ). Best of luck with your birding. Of course there are many other web-sites that can help a birder in Toronto. If you have not already, please check out these sites. http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/ONTB.html - up to date postings of recent bird sightings; iphone app available http://outdoorontario.net/birds/phpBB/ - Another web-site where recent sightings are posted. More of a local Toronto focus. Many other forums are available for birding discussion too. http://www.torontobirding.ca/ - Toronto Ornithology Club http://www.drfn.ca/ - Durham Region Field Naturalists http://www.pickeringnaturalists.org/ - Pickering Naturalists http://www.hamiltonnature.org/ - Hamilton Naturalists Club Please feel free to add more useful links in the comments section.
